CREMed Best Paper Award 2009 - 2010
CREMed was pleased to award the 2009-2010 Best Paper Award to the paper: "Economic integration and the two margins of trade: An application to the Euro-Mediterranean agreements." Authors: Sami Bensassi (Universitat Jaume I, Spain), Laura Márquez-Ramos (Universitat Jaume I, Spain) and Inmaculada Martínez-Zarzoso (Universitat Jaume I, Spain and Ibero-American Institute for Economic Research, University of Goettingen, Germany). Four additional papers were selected as finalists and incorporated in the CREMed Working Paper Series. More details here.

World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies
The third World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) was organized jointly by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Government of Catalonia in Barcelona. CREMed participated at the event with the European Institute (London School of Economics) with a Panel Series on Economies of the Mediterranean. Find the summary here.

"Labor markets Performance and Migration Flows in Arab Mediterranean Countries"
This European Commission study, carried out during 2009 by the European University Institute (RSCAS) Florence, was presented in Barcelona in a debate co-sponsored by the Servei d'Ocupació de Catalunya (SOC) and CREMed on Wednesday, June 16, 2010. CREMed also sponsored the public presentation of the study held the same evening at the office of the Regional Representation of the European Commission in Barcelona. Lecture “The road not traveled: Education reform in the MENA region”
The Ramón Areces Foundation hosted a conference on education reform in the MENA region on November 19th 2010 in Madrid. Co-organized with the CREMed, the event featured a lecture adressed by Dr. Ahmed Galal, Director of the Economic Research Forum in Cairo, Egypt, a regional research institution covering the Arab countries, Iran and Turkey.

Conference on “The challenges of fragility to development policy”
CREMed hosted a conference on “The challenges of fragility to development policy” on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th of May 2009 at Ciutadella Campus - Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Jointly held with the European University Institute -European Report on Development- the event analyzed and examined the major causes of fragility, as a deep understanding of the latter is crucial to the design of appropriate development policies.

Inauguration of the Center for Research on the Economies of the Mediterranean
The Barcelona GSE and the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) presented the Center for Research on the Economies of the Mediterranean (CREMed) as a joint initiative on November 7, 2008. The inaugural conference on “Institutional Change and Development in the Middle East and North Africa” was given by Mustapha K. Nabli, Senior Advisor, Regional Chief Economist and Director of the Social and Economic Development Group within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region of the World Bank.
